Sparks and Ink explained
Is Inkmon free to play? Yes — and more usefully, here is the rule the whole economy is built around:
Caring for your creature never requires Sparks or money.
Feeding, cleaning, playing, petting, sleeping, and recovering from Unwell are all reachable without spending anything. What you can pay for is making new creatures and new art.
The two currencies
Ink — the soft one
Ink buys: meals, medicine, décor for the Den, care treats.
You earn Ink from: daily rewards, quests, and optional rewarded videos.
Ink is the day-to-day currency, and it is designed to be abundant. If you open the app daily and claim what's offered, you will not run out feeding one creature.
Sparks — the hard one
Sparks buy: hatching a new creature, and regenerating the art when a creature reaches a new growth stage. That's the whole list.
You get Sparks from: purchase, and from the free grants the game gives you.
Each is 1 Spark — one to hatch, one per stage.
The rule that connects them
Ink can never convert into Sparks. No exchange, no bundle, no path. Rewarded videos give Ink; they never give Sparks. This is enforced in the code and tested, not just a policy.
The reason: if Ink converted to Sparks, then watching enough videos would be the "correct" way to play, and every part of the game would quietly become a chore that stands between you and the conversion rate.
What this means in practice
You can reach the final growth stage without spending a cent. If you're out of Sparks when your creature reaches a stage, the stage still happens — you get the growth celebration with the art you have, and you can regenerate it later whenever you like. A stage is never locked behind a purchase. Only the new artwork waits.
You can always recover from Unwell for free. Medicine costs Ink or a rewarded video, but the free care path — all four stats at 60 or above through one sleep — always exists and always works. See the Unwell guide.
Ads are optional and capped. Rewarded videos are something you choose to watch for Ink, with a daily limit. Nothing in the care loop is gated behind watching one.
How to get more Ink
- Claim your daily rewards. The largest single source, and it takes one tap.
- Finish quests. They mostly ask you to do the caring you were going to do anyway.
- Rewarded videos, up to the daily cap.
- Don't overfeed. Feeding at full Hunger consumes no item — the app won't let you waste one — but feeding at 90 to top up 10 spends the same meal as feeding at 40.
What is actually paid
Spark packs, Ink packs, and décor. That's it. There is no subscription required to care for a creature, no paywall between you and your own drawing, and nothing you draw can ever be taken away or sold to anyone else.
